I just had a serious brainwave as I sat down to write this post that I should hook you guys up with some Olympic gift ideas. Because I was going to start this post off by noting that everyone’s favourite ex-pat is no doubt jazzed about the upcoming events – and of course you all know I’m talking about Madonna, aka Madge, aka Her Madgesty, who long-ago defected to the UK. Anyway Olympics aside, Madonna is a busy lady, and yet still manages to be beloved by many. If you’ve got a friend that’s a Madonna fan, then consider yourself in luck – today’s picks are all around the infamous lady herself.
Material Girl collection – $8+ @ The Bay
Over the last few years, Madonna and her daughter Lola have finally embraced Madonna’s long-held nickname, in the form of a juniors clothing line sold exclusively at The Bay in Canada. The collection is definitely cut for the younger set – your favourite niece or daughter would flip for the bright colours, short hemlines, and girly details – but there’s plenty of pieces that deserve a spot in your besties wardrobe. And just because you’ve got an A-Lister attached, doesn’t mean the prices are out of this world. Pretty much every piece is under $50, making this a great collection to peruse when you’re looking for a special, sparkly birthday gift.
W.E. (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack) – $28.04 @ Amazon
For better or worse, when Madonna makes a film – you hear about it. In this particular instance, Madonna stepped behind the lens (and the typewriter, as co-writer) to direct the story of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee that stole King Edward VIII’s heart and caused him to give up his spot on the throne, all for the woman he loved. Told in alternating time periods between a modern-day woman named Wally that studies their romance as aspirational, only to be disappointed at the grim realities the couple faced, and the in-the-past representation of their romance both sizzling and floundering, the film has largely been cited for its immense visual appeal, despite receiving rather lukewarm reviews otherwise. Diehard Madonna or Royal fans alike will definitely want to give it a whirl though.
Crazy For You Print – $30 @ SuZanna Anna
The only ‘unsanctioned’ item on this list, but it was too cute to resist. SuZanna Anna is an Etsy shop that specializes in pop culture / lyric posters rendered in stark black and white to bright, cheerful colours, featuring lyrics from the past & present. Madonna’s addition to the mix is her classic mid-tempo ballad ‘Crazy For You’, and would make a sincerely sweet gift from any boys out there looking to show their ladies how much they care – whether or not you’ve said the l-word yet.
MDNA (Deluxe Edition) – $14.99 @ Amazon
After making a splash at this year’s Superbowl, Madonna once again took the throne with her new album MDNA, which debuted at number one in both Canada and the USA. Spawning two hits (so far) – the infectious Give Me All Your Luvin and Girl Gone Wild – Madonna also took yet another step ahead of every other artist ever to have the most top ten singles. If you’ve got a friend gearing up for a stop on this summer’s MDNA tour, be sure to hook them up with her latest album so she can sing along to the classics and get into the groove with her Madgesty’s latest and greatest.
Madonna Truth or Dare – $35+ @ The Bay, Sears, Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu
Believe it or not, this marks Madonna’s first foray into fragrance – and I have to say, it’s elegantly inspired by the various phases of Madonna’s life as outlined in this post. The title of the fragrance harkens back to the early 90s and the identically-titled documentary of her fame at the time. The Regency-inspired luminescent white bottle with beaded trim and gold accents marries her 80s material girl style with her present-day Material Girl edgy clothing appeal. And the scent itself channels the classic ‘English Rose’ she has her actors portray in W.E. – it’s incredibly feminine, like walking into a garden filled with white florals. More specifically, expect to waft in tuberose, gardenia, and jasmine in heavy measures, followed by a earthy amber and vanilla combo as the scent winds down. It’s a lovely, powerful scent that feels unique on a younger girl, and well-matched for a mature woman. Snap up the gift set for your mother or your daughter – as long as they love florals, they’ll love this.
